Welcome to

Rainbow babies & kids

Bryanston and Douglasdale Branches

Rainbow Babies and Kids began in 2010 as a nursery school situated in the heart of Bryanston on 4000m2 of very secure and well kept grounds who are open full day from 7am to 17h30 and half day until 14h00. Conveniently located for people living or working in the area and for those commuting to Sandton.

Rainbow Babies and Kids Douglasdale opened in February 2021 on a beautiful, childfriendly propery this is designed for little people, with a beautiful, large playground.

We adopt a “child-centered” approach and are focused on developing your child’s natural strengths and interests. Every child is an individual and children react differently to others in certain situations. We feel this individuality needs to be accommodated so that children feel understood and are able to learn to express themselves in a healthy and constructive manner. We believe in positive re-enforcement to model good behavior and discipline.

"Rainbow Children" are the generation of children after the Indigo and Crystals. Rainbows are absolutely open hearted and unconditionally loving, highly sensitive, forgiving and magical.

Our different classes

We aim to love, nurture, educate and protect all those in our care. We have a “child-centered” approach that focuses on each individual’s strengths, to develop a confident, secure child with a positive self image. We understand that children have their own timetable and allow each child to mature and develop at their own pace, but still ensuring that the children reach their potential for their developmental stage.

Rainbow splits the young classes based on developmental milestones achieved by your child.  Each child has their own timetable and should not be rushed.  Our babies to 9 months are in their own special centre and once baby is crawling, he/she will progress into the crawler creche.  Only once baby is toddling do they move into the toddler playgroup.  This developmental focus allows babies to develop and grow in their own time as well as be stimulated appropriately.

Extra murals

Extra Mural activities are available for your child and the starting age varies depending on the activity.  Some start from as young as crawlers and others only at 3 years of age.  These are optional extras should you whish your child to engage in them.    Rainbow however highly recommends that parents choose carefully and do not overschedule their children as they are already very busy during the day.  Extra mural time does not encroach on the normal academic school programme.

Rainbow only has one compulsory extra Mural – being Music Box.  Music is the foundation of all mathematical skill foundation.

    Baby House

There is a dedicated baby house in which babies will be cared for until they are developmentally ready for the toddler stage. This baby house has a milk kitchen, in which we clean and sterilise bottles as well as make-up milk formula or heat expressed breast milk. Each baby under 6 months will sleep with a breathing monitor. Babies are kept separate from the rest of the school to control cross infection from older children.

    Medical Support

A Paediatric Sister, Sr Nicky of the Bryanston Family and Baby Clinic in the NHC, CPR – and first aid trained,  consults with Rainbow reg Health and weaning and all staff are trained in CPR. Sister Nicky visits the baby house for weighing, monitoring and also offers inoculations should parents wish to take advantage of this convenience. We are connected to ADT who have a medical response team and can be on the scene within 3 minutes in the event of an emergency.

    Schedules

    Eat, sleep, play

We understand that your baby has their own schedule and we aim to adhere to this, especially in very young babies who tend to get over-stimulated very quickly. They will gradually grow into a sleep, eat and play routine. When awake we will play, we follow the sleep sense wake time routine for our babies.

    Nutrition

Bread, fruit, veg and proteins are prepared on-site. Weaning is done according to your preference but we also happy to assist. In addition, the School Clinic sister, Sr Nicky, is very happy to advise new parents on the current best practice when it comes to weaning.

    Class Size / Staff

We only take 6 babies at a time to keep the class small and intimate. There are 2 full time ladies caring for your baby at any time. Ration of 1:3.

Pooh Bear House - Crawlers - 9 months to toddling

Your baby’s perspective changes on the world once they are crawling. They also become very mobile and active.

We have a specially designed crawler play house with ball ponds, walking/pushing toys and cruising equipment.  Your baby has much more outside time and is challenged with more developmentally appropriate activities.

    Schedules

    • The crawler house schedules and activities are centered around your toddler’s natural sleep times as baby still naps 2 times per day.
    • Music Box is also introduced for music stimulation.

    Nutrition

We assist in weaning baby onto more textured food and babies are spoiled with teething foods - biltong, rice cakes, mango strips, etc.

    Class size / Staff

We only take on 9 crawlers at a time and once they can toddle they wean into the toddler play group.

Our ratio is 1:3 in the crawler class.

Noddy / Big Ears Toddler class

    12 months - 2 years

The Noddy and Big Ears Class are specially designed for the toddlers who are just learning to vocalise their first words, getting more stable on their legs and learning to feed themselves.  This is a special play group in which the only expectation is for them to feel loved, secure, entertained and safe as well as to say – “Please, Thank-You and to share”.

    Nutrition

We serve 3 nutritious and wholesome meals a day with two snacks in between. Breakfast, lunch and a light dinner for children staying full day, as well as snacks at 10am and 3pm which comprise either a sandwich, fruit puree or fruit with real fruit juice or rooibos tea. E-spring filtered water is available all day for the children. Toddlers are assisted with feeding themselves till they have mastered this skill.

Additional fun happens with Baker days, Birthday and weekly baking.

    Additional Support

As our children grow and develop some many show Sensory, ADD, ADHD and other tendencies. We have specialists on hand who are happy to consult at Rainbow for any children’s sessions booked with them by parents.  Their relationship is independent of Rainbow making it ethical.  These specialists are – Play therapists, Physio therapists, Speech consultants as well as Occupational therapists.  This is offered as an added convenience for those parents that struggle to take more time off work.  It is well known that the sooner any indications arise that a child needs added support and is dealt with, the quicker your child responds and will hopefully avoid early primary school learning challenges.

Play - education at this age is centred around learn through play - tea parties, construction with blocks, dolls, fantasy, playdough, crayons to draw, dance, music.

    Library

We encourage reading, imagination and fantasy play, and have a comprehensive fantasy play room with a library of books and DVD's for rainy days.

    Class Size / Staff

We only take 10/11 toddlers per class at a time giving a ration of 1:5 when the class is full.

    Kids 3 - 5 years

The play ground for this age group is age appropriate and is designed to help develop Gross Motor functions. Fantasy play, physical play and mental puzzles are encouraged at this age. We also follow a curriculum out that is age appropriate for each of these age groups.

    Nutrition

We serve 3 nutritious and wholesome meals a day with two snacks in between. Breakfast, lunch and a light dinner for children staying full day, as well as snacks at 10am and 3pm which comprise of either a sandwich, fruit or a special treat on a Tuesday and Thursday at 3 of either Jelly, custard or ice-cream. E-spring filtered water is available all day for the children.

Fun is built in with Bakerdays, Birthdays and our theme inspired baking activities.

    Additional Support

As our children grow and develop many show Sensory, ADD, ADHD and other tendencies. We have specialists visiting the school once a week to "consult" with these children so that parents do not have to take special leave from work. It is well known that the sooner these issues are dealt with, the sooner the child responds and will hopefully avoid early school learning problems. Some of the therapies available are Physio, Speech Therapy, OT
